Some moons started to feel more like filler and less like ingeniously crafted obstacle courses. The capture mechanic was great, and the platforming sections were pretty fun, but all of my enjoyment came to a screeching halt when I was forced to look for moons in mundane places or hiding spots. The amazing soundtrack, the space setting, and zero gravity were ultimately aesthetic but greatly complemented the gameplay.įor me Odyssey had its moments, but ultimately its sandbox structure sort of ruined it for me. This kept the gameplay fresh and fast-paced, and the game continues to astonish you with its ingenuity every passing second. The game took you from planet to planet, each with its own unique mechanic or idea, and then zipped you to another planet before you got bored of it. With Super Mario Galaxy 2 being my favorite game of all time, I think it helped put into perspective why I was a bit let down by Odyssey.įrom a design standpoint, SMG was raw platforming bliss.
